Galaxy MI found a solution to this. Try 'Wipe Cache Partition' from the boot menu. Turn off the phone and then try turning it on with power button and up button pressed simultaneously.
In my case, I had to troubleshoot one extra step: I could not reach this boot menu with this step. The error it shows with such failed attempt is "pdp backup fail setup-wizard finish". After turning your phone off, either connect a type c headphone or connect type c cable to your laptop/pc and then try power button+up button. Type c cable to laptop way worked for me. Then I did this "Wipe Cache Partition" and bam! I could get my recent + home button again. I changed my phone pin too in the interim.
P.S. Never rely on Samsung customer care guys. I tried Indian customer care guys. One suggested very weird reason that you need to contact your office IT admin as they installed outlook on my phone and another was next level **bleep**. He suggested me to take backup of all the data and leave my phone to service center who will simply wipe out all my data and will do a factory reset. Highly disappointed with customer care executives. Total useless
