Dear Samsung Team,

I see a major issue on my s23ultra while using Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime to stream HDR content or using local video player(such as Mx Player Pro or VLC) to watch HDR content, it has low brightness and is dull looking.

1. When watching HDR content on the streaming apps mentioned above or downloaded HDR content using Mx Player Pro or VLC, for example:
On a scale of 1 to 15, the brightness looks to be cap at around 5. Above 5 the screen flickers but doesn't get any bright. If you go below 5 you start seeing the screen to dim.

2. After looking at many reddit posts and Samsung Community pages, this problem was pointed out by many people: I have discovered that when watching HDR content if you shine a flash light onto the front camera the device gets bright as its supposed to be in HDR even though adaptive/auto brightness is off. Then eventually dims back.

So this clearly shows that it's a problem with adaptive/auto brightness messing up with HDR preventing it from reaching max brightness. SDR looks very bright and doesn't have the adaptive brightness problem.

I have compared my phone to another S23 Ultra and it has the same issue as mine.
Also compared to a Note 10+ and had no issues playing HDR on Netflix and video player correctly. The Note 10+ gets way way brighter in HDR than my S23 which should be possible specs wise. This could be a region specific or international version problem.

Note: Not to test this issue with YouTube because YouTube app doesn't control the device brightness as compared to any video player or streaming apps. So YouTube is brighter, but even in YouTube when watching HDR Content, the flash light trick works proving further about this adaptive brightness problem in HDR content then again dims back.

Please fix this problem in future firmware updates. A lot of people are having this problem.

Thank you.

Guys if anybody is still facing the same issue please check this video. This is probably due to extra dim option turned on inside accessibility settings.

Clearly you haven't read this community post properly... the issue is an adaptive brightness bug, not what you are referring to at all.

The extra dim feature is a basic stuff that of course we all have checked out or found by now before making this amount of noise to Samsung.

Even if extra dim is on, it doesn't explain why the flashlight trick mentioned in the post makes the display brighter in HDR even if adaptive brightness is off. And it doesn't explain why this happens in HDR only but not in SDR and also that SDR is way brighter than HDR.

I am also facing the same issue on S23 Ultra and The same flashlight trick works. I am on OneUI 6.0 but have faced the same issue on OneUI 5.1 too. Budget phones are giving better viewing experience than this premium phone. Not sure why samsung or Netflix is not taking this on high priority.

Same issue can't do much unless Samsung software developers don't look at this

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the response I have received from Samsung regarding an issue I have been experiencing with my S22 Ultra, S23 Ultra, and now my S24 Ultra. Despite providing extensive communication and video evidence of the problem, Samsung has deemed it to be a feature rather than a problem.

I find this response unacceptable and am frustrated by the lack of support I have received from Samsung. I have paid a premium price for these devices and expect them to function properly. The issue I am experiencing is preventing me from fully enjoying the content on my devices, and I am disappointed that Samsung is not taking this matter seriously.

  • I believe that the only way to resolve this issue is to bring it to the attention of the wider public. I am considering posting about my experience on social media and reaching out to consumer protection agencies. I hope that by doing so, I can pressure Samsung into taking action and providing me with a satisfactory resolution.

Great man, I'm all here to support you.

Hopefully this time they take us seriously.
