Phone overheating and restarting - why?

My phone is overheating. It restarted by itself twice; both, yesterday and today - in all instances the phone was getting charged and I was on/got a call. It's 30+ months old.. may be time to change the battery. 
Or could there be another reason?

Yes after reset, it will continue to download all patches , security updates one by one.

Consider at least few minutes for reset. But would take at least 2 hours to restore all. You can manually copy paste your big data folders to your computer using USB cable with smartswitch.
