I recently bought 4 new tags 2, as a test I put one in the car and it stopped updating 2 hours ago even while it's near my wife's Samsung Galaxy phone, she drove 50 km away. It's a bit pointless to not update when I need to know where my car is? Is this a flawed design? I want to know at anytime where the device is not only when it's in an area with other galaxy phone. Pls advise.
The SmartTag isn’t only being tracked by your smartphone, but also by any other Samsung device out there that has the SmartThings app installed. Tag 2 uses both Bluetooth LE and ultra wide-band to connect to phones.
In your example, your wife's galaxy phone should have SmartThings app installed and Bluetooth/ UWB enabled. And of course, to send updates, the phone should have a data connection.
Other than that, the only other dependency is that it uses samsung's own network to send updates. I haven't seen any option to hide it.
SmartTags can be attached your valuables so that you can easily find them when you need them the most. SmartTags communicate with your Galaxy smartphone or tablet using Bluetooth and have a maximum connection range of 120 meters. If your SmartTag is outside of this range, you can still locate it using offline finding in SmartThings Find.
SmartThings Find uses other users Galaxy devices, in the Galaxy Find Network, to help you locate your SmartTag, making sure that your valuables can be found no matter where they are.
