The Exynos 1000 and Snapdragon 875 will have an identical core configuration

A leak suggests that the Exynos 1000 will use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 875's 1+3+4 core configuration. Both chips will likely use modified versions of ARM's Cortex-X1 super core and Cortex-A78 cores. The move could help Samsung bridge the ever-widening gap between its in-house silicon and Qualcomm's offerings.

If things go as planned, we can expect Qualcomm to unveil the Snapdragon 875 in December this year. The chip may be in mass-production already and will likely debut alongside the Xiaomi Mi 11 in January. Earlier reports told us that the Snapdragon 875 would use one ARM Cortex-X1 Super core, three Cortex-A78 cores, and four Cortex-A55 cores. It appears that Samsung's upcoming Exynos 1000 will also be following its footsteps.

Renowned leaker Ice Universe just Tweeted that the Exynos 1000 will also use a 1+3+4 configuration. However, the actual cores used will likely be different. Samsung could use a modified version of the Cortex-X1, along with other custom-designed cores. Considering that Samsung collaborated with ARM to develop custom CPUs, the re-emergence of its doomed Mongoose cores can't be ruled out.

It comes as no surprise that Samsung is following the Qualcomm Snapdragon 875's footsteps for its Exynos 1000. Interestingly enough, Samsung will be manufacturing Qualcomm's 2020 flagship SoC, but it is unlikely that's the reason why Samsung opted for the 1+3+4 configuration. The Exynos 990 was nothing short of an embarrassment, and Samsung has to catch up with Qualcomm if it hopes to retain customers
