Hello community!

If you browse through smartphone forums, you'll see pretty much identical complaints about every single smartphone available in the market. These are largely aboutheating, battery drain, lagging, freezing, random restarts, etc. There is not one model of smartphone of any brand where you wouldn't find people complaining about these exact same problems.

That brings us to this question: how do we solve these problems?

The answer is: By elimination of the commons.

Let me explain:

Let's assume there are two identical smartphones, where one is having a particular problem while the other is not. The first logical step towards identifying the problem is finding what is common between the two devices and crossing them out (eliminating the commons) as the cause. Now whatever remains in the list are the ones we must look at more closely first.

Here is where the answer lies most of the time. Each user is different, and each user installs a different set of apps for his use. If one user has a problem, while the other is not, it makes sense to first look at what apps that user with the problem has installed. Both users have the same device, which means identical software and almost identical hardware. If the app or apps can be identified, the problem gets resolved most of the time.

Same holds true about various settings in the device. One must spend some time configuring the device properly, and removing unnecessary permissions given to apps.

Please note that I am not ruling out the possibility of a problem with the hardware or software. It is quite possible that a hardware component escaped the several stages in Quality Control and ended up getting installed on a device. Or a hardware component unexpectedly started developing problems post manufacturing and assembling. These are electronic items and it is very much a possibility.

If a problem is indeed with the software (OS), companies will usually identify it and release an update, as it is in their interest to do so. But if an update doesn't come through or it does but doesn't solve your problem, you really have to evaluate the other possibilities first.

The point is this: don't jump into the conclusion that there is a problem with the software and an update would resolve it. Because the moment you come to that conclusion, you'll stop evaluating other possibilities causing the problem, and will keep waiting for that magical update to resolve your issues. It won't, and that will cause you frustration and negative opinion about the company and its products. There are several other things, chief among them being the apps installed, that one must try before concluding that the software or hardware is indeed the fault. If you don't identify the problem, I can assure you that you'll have these very same problems even if you buy another device or move to another brand.

There are a bunch of members in the community who will jump in to show support for you by blaming the company in the name of creating awareness. They do this just to gain 'likes' as if it will make their life actually any better. They will go around writing 'TL;DR' when they can't answer questions with valid points, or even become abusive. I call these people'Brilliant' (yeah, within apostrophy or quotes) but you get the point. It's best toignore these budhu (s). They will never address the issue on hand, and therefore never solve the problem. The only thing they'll do is add fuel to fire.

I have written a few articles which will hopefully clear misconceptions. Check them out at leisure:

The problem is most of the people are not tech savvy. They're not aware of these things.

True. But blindly blaming the company and asking for that magical update won't help them.

People are like that bud, they'll complain coz that's the only thing they can do as samsungs customer complaints relationship in India is basically 💩. Most of the people when everything goes right they won't post complaints or bad reviews, it's when their device screw up then they complain coz they need an outlet to let off their frustrations as losing their hard earned money is unbearable for many. Your n mine device works okay doesn't mean that other people with bad devices should shut up.

People are free to complain, n if people don't complain then companies will start dictating unfriendly terms n force their profit making decisions upon us customers, that's never going to be friendly for customers.

Look in foreign countries, if one customer complains then it is immediately(better than here )taken care off, the law n consumer protection systems are better there, also the people won't stop complaining there at all, just look at forums of US n UK it's like strike there.

We Indians should know our rights n stop the third level treatment from these companies, no matter which device we own.

Over the years, i have had first hand experience of several smartphones from different brands, both personally, and of those with family and friends.

I have experienced these problems during my initial days and figured out that most of these problems are almost always caused by poorly coded apps. And I have spent a lot of time finding good apps on Google Play Store, and i can tell you it wasn't easy. Google Play Store is full of rubbish apps, and you really have dig through rubbish to find the good ones. I have undertaken that exercise and presented my results in one of my posts. As mentioned in that post, this is a dynamic process and the list of apps could change with time.

All that said, you are right in saying that the majority people who post in forums are those who are having a problem. But this majority is actually a minority of the total user base. If there were indeed so many problems with software or hardware, companies won't be able to sell their products in such large numbers.

Sure, people are free to complain. But when they do, we must try and provide proper advise and help. Simply fuelling the flame won't solve problems. There are a few budhu (s) here in the forum (like in every other forum) who do just that.

And a problem that isn't caused by software will never be resolved with an update. The result: people will keep crying for updates (which will never come) and flamers will only spread negativity, adding insult to injury. Jumping into advising people to claim warranty, return or replace the device, file a consumer complaint, etc. is plain dumb. There are several other things that one must try which can potentially resolve the issue at hand.

And this is a universal problem. You'll find them in every region, and for every model of every brand of smartphones. Consumer courts will help only in genuine cases, not when there is no fault of the company.

Whatever i have written in my posts have all been tried and tested on several smartphone models from different brands. I know they work. But not without trying.

Right. One need not go through menacing trouble shooting on a brand new phone, especially a premium one. I have friends in US. There, they can simply return/replace the device for even simple things! And here we have to go through myriad of steps to even convince the seller. What is more sad is the fact that consumers are not aware of their rights. And some people think that one should go through hell and high water to make do with what they got! Nothing can be far from that. It's due to this mentality that Samsung is getting away with the Exynos 9611 issue and s20plus display failure issue.
