The upper portion of my Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra display isn’t responding to touch, but the lower portion works fine. However, the S Pen works perfectly across the entire screen. I ran a phone diagnostic test, and it confirmed that the upper part of the touchscreen has an issue.

Note: I’ve already tried restarting the phone and removing the screen protector, but the problem remains. The phone is 11 months old and was purchased from an official Samsung showroom in Kolkata, India.

I’d like to know:

  • Why this problem might have occurred?

Go to Service Center while your device is still in warranty.. hopefully they will fix this, unless there is some physical damage

Hello Arshi, the issue isn’t with the display panel itself, but specifically with the touch digitizer layer (the layer that detects your finger input), the S24 Ultra has multiple display Layers, first being the OLED Panel that shows the image, 2nd being the Touch Digitizer, the layer that detects the touch, aka the Capacitive Layer, and then theres the Wacom Digitizer, the layer that senses S Pen input, Since the S Pen uses a completely different digitizer, it working fine means the display and the Wacom layer are healthy, but your capacitive touch digitizer in the upper section has failed or is glitching, This is the most probable cause. The upper portion of the digitizer might have developed a hardware fault (partial failure of touch sensing circuits).

So what could've possibly happened is:

Micro cracks or bending (even if not visible). Internal manufacturing defect (developed over time). Pressure or heat damage. Even if you never dropped it, digitizer layers can fail from minor stress or heat cycles, specially on newer edge displays like the S24 Ultra’s curved one.

or

The display flex cable that connects the digitizer to the motherboard might be partially loose or oxidized, it can cause only part of the touch to stop responding. Though rare, it can happen if the phone faced a bump or was under pressure (like in a tight pocket).
Since You already ran diagnostics, restarted, and removed the screen protector, so software is almost certainly not the cause. Still, a full safe mode test or factory reset (after backup) could confirm it 100%, but hardware seems way more likely here.

since your S24 Ultra’s upper screen touch not working means the finger touch digitizer is partially damaged, while the S Pen still working fine confirms the display itself is okay. The only fix is a display assembly replacement, since the digitizer is fused with the screen. In India, an official Samsung repair costs about ₹11,000–₹12,000, third-party shops charge around ₹15,000–₹18,000, and abroad it’s roughly $250–$320 (₹20,000–₹27,000). You can check if the local Samsung service center where you are now honors India’s warranty, if not, request a paid screen replacement using an OEM part. Avoid cheap repairs that use non original displays, and if the phone’s still usable, you can keep using it until you return to India where the 11 month warranty should cover the repair for free.
