I don't know how to use wifi direct, though my new galaxy phone is receiving files from my older phone (galaxy j2) with that function but I can't send files from my phone to that device.

Both are same bro, nearby share is fully automatic you just need to select the receiver to send files. Update the google play store app to latest version on your M31.

You know google they keep changing things without we know. I believe from android 10 nearby share available but it's optional. Now google integrated it with play store settings for simpler and easy use.
(Wi-fi direct still available for manual connection.)
