Samsung unveiled their first Virtual reality headset at the Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event last month. When I was attending the event, I was really interested in knowing more about this device. But Samsung just left all of us wondering since they didn't provided us with much details.

However, some journalists and YouTubers like MKBHD got a hands on-experience with this device. So, I would try and research through their experience to create this post explaining everything about Project Moohan and Android XR. Stick around because I think this device has potential to change the way we interact with technology in certain aspects.

What is Android XR?

It Google's new mixed reality OS designed for headsets and smart glasses, like the prototypes. Basically, Android version for headsets and smart glasses. Google wants this operating system to be gateway for the next generation of computing, and they want to revolutionize the way we interact with technology in general.

What makes Android XR Special?

  1. AI Integration: Android XR is deeply integrated with Google's Gemini (Google's Advanced Generative AI) . Which allows for natural, conversational interactions within the XR environment. Something, that impressed Marques Brownlee during his review with Android XR. It reduced the overall fatigue of using hand gestures by simply using voice with Gemini for most of the tasks.
  2. Open EcosystemGoogle is emphasizing an open platform approach for Android XR for both Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality.
  3. Cross-Device Compatibility: Android XR is designed to work across a range of devices, starting with headsets and eventually expanding to smartglasses, ensuring a consistent experience regardless of the hardware.

  4. Integration with Google Services: Android XR seamlessly integrates with popular Google services like YouTube, Google TV, Google Photos, Google Maps, and Chrome. Making transition for an Android phone user much more seamless.

What is Samsung's Project Moohan?

This headset, developed in collaboration between  Samsung and Google, will be among the first devices to launch with Android XR in 2025. It's designed to provide a high-quality XR experience with a focus on immersion and productivity. Very similar to Meta Quest and Apple VisionPro.

  • Passthrough Capabilities: The headset features passthrough cameras, allowing users to see their real-world surroundings while wearing the device, enabling mixed reality experiences.
  • Foveated Rendering: Thanks to its eye tracking capabilities, Moohan can utilize foveated rendering, which focuses processing power on the area of the user's vision, improving performance and efficiency.
  • Multimodal Interactions: Moohan supports a variety of input methods, including hand tracking, voice commands, and traditional keyboard/mouse input.

Biggest Challenge for Project Moohan and Android XR?

  • App Ecosystem: The success of Moohan will depend on the development of a robust app ecosystem for Android XR. It remains to be seen how many developers will embrace the platform and create compelling experiences. This can create the egg and the chicken problem if not addressed properly by Google.
  • Performance and User Experience: Real-world performance and user experience will be crucial factors in determining the success of Moohan. It needs to deliver on its promises of immersive experiences and seamless interactions.
  • Competition: Moohan faces competition from established players like Meta, as well as other upcoming XR devices. It needs to differentiate itself and offer unique value propositions to stand out in the market.

And finally, it's going to be a big challenge for Samsung and Google to convince the consumers to adopt this new technology in their daily life. They need to integrate specific workflows on this new Android XR platform for people to consider adopting Android XR to replace their regular PCs.

It's an exciting time to be a tech nerd in my opinion. Because we are in the middle of a tech revolution. Its going to be exciting to see if Android XR would be able to replicate the success of Android OS from smartphones.
