These days people are most conscious about there smartphone's battery's, UI's look and also there visual ergonomics i.e.. light emitted by the screen. This things lead them to use 'Dark Mode'.

Let's learn about Dark Mode more deeply.

What is Dark Mode?

Dark Mode: Light-on-dark color scheme, also called Dark mode, Dark Theme or Night Mode, is a supplemental mode that can be used to display mostly dark surfaces on the UI. The design reduces the light emitted by device screens while maintaining the minimum color contrast ratios required for readability. The advantages of Dark Mode are, it enhances visual ergonomics by reducing eye strain, facilitating screens to adjust according to current light conditions and providing comfort of use at night or in dark environments.

Additionally, it conserves battery power, thereby enabling device usage for longer periods without charging. Usually, the Dark Mode theme can be turned off or on using a prominently displayed toggle icon on the screen. Alternatively, it is placed in the menu options or within the app’s settings.

Why Dark Mode should be used? ( Pros.)

The most commonly known and scientific advantage of dark mode is that it saves energy consumption on devices with OLED or AMOLED displays..

OLED panels, each pixel is individually lit. When the background is white, all the pixels are turned on and the display demands more power. When pixels are black or even dark grey, as is the case in dark mode, the display’s power requirements are naturally lowered.

This power-saving ability of dark mode is limited to OLED screens, so phones, monitors, and laptops with LCD displays don’t really benefit from it. That’s because LCD screens illuminate using a back panel that always lights up completely.

Health and Well-Being !

Dark themes reduce the luminance emitted by device screens, while still meeting minimum color contrast ratios. They help improve visual ergonomics by reducing eye strain, adjusting brightness to current lighting conditions, and facilitating screen use in dark environments – all while conserving battery power. Devices with OLED screens benefit from the ability to turn off black pixels at any time of day.

Turn on as Schedule !

There is a feature provided in Samsung's smartphones having dark mode feature that is 'Turn on as Schedule' in which a smartphone automatically switches to dark mode when the sun is set and vice-versa. Users don't even have to keep switching several times a day, which is truly great usability.

Super Cool Look !

When Talking about UI's looks, well Dark Mode looks super amazing. While most products such as PCs, gaming consoles etc... are going for that similar bland white look, the Dark Mode does offer something different that feels mysterious and new.

When Dark Mode shouldn't be used? (Cons.)

However, not everything about dark backgrounds is good. For example, when a user is using a device in a well-lit room or in direct sunlight, text positioned on dark backgrounds can be difficult to read. So the only reason not to implement a dark mode is when you're certain your app is exclusively being used during bright daylight, but this is rather exceptional.

How Dark Mode works?

Dark mode in any app shows a black background with white or coloured text rather than the usual white background with black text. Dark mode ideally should help reduce that and make it easier on the eyes for those who like to use stare at their phone/tablet screen at night. It, however, won’t completely reduce the strain on your eyes.

In a dark theme, components retain the same default elevation levels and shadows as components in lighter themes. However, in a dark theme, the surfaces of different elevation levels are illuminated differently.

How to activate Dark Mode in a Smartphone? And What Android version does it need to support?

There are a few different ways to activate dark mode:
¤ Open Settings App
¤ Click on Display
¤ Select Dark Mode
'or'
Turning on and off via quick settings panel -

Alternatively, a user can pull down from the top of the display to reveal the Quick Settings, then he’ll find a button 'Dark Mode' to switch it on.

From the various options available a user can choose to activate it ( dark mode ) always or to turn it on as schedule as mentioned above.

Minimum android version needed to support in built Dark Mode is Android Pie (Android Version 9) or more.

Dark mode is good-send in dimly lit environments

Regardless of all the proof, studies, and research that are available, using dark mode over light mode is ultimately a personal choice of each individual. No matter what the science says, if a user like dark mode more, he going to use dark mode. If he is a light mode person, sure, go ahead - the choice is his. Personal preference rules king here again.
