Blue Light Filter

What is Blue Light?

Blue light is part of the visible light spectrum. The visible spectrum contains blue, orange, green, yellow, and red light rays. Red, yellow, and green light rays have long wavelengths

The screens of digital devices (including Smart-Phones) and personal computers emit short-wave blue light.

Health problems: According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)

-Blue light rays can cause cancer, retinal damage, melatonin disruption, AMD, etc.

Also, long-term exposure to blue light can permanently damage your eyes.

-Melatonin is the hormone responsible for regulating the sleep/wake cycles in the brain. Not surprising, blue light directly inhibits our body’s melatonin flow, hurting our ability to fall asleep, in addition to negatively impacting the quality of the sleep we get.

More time in front of screens = more blue light = more headaches & fatigue = lower productivity

Further more, blue light can contribute to blurred vision, sleep loss, fatigue, and dry eyes. These are  symptoms of digital eye strain, or computer vision syndrome (CVS). CVS can trigger neck and shoulder strain.

Children under the age of 14 who use tablets and phones with high energy light are at special risk.

Until 14, their corneas aren’t fully developed, and lack the protection of adult eyes — especially if they’re constantly in front of a device.

Increased and prolonged exposure to HEV is a contributing factor to increased diagnoses of nearsightedness among children.

How to Protect Your Eyes

Digital health advocates recommend that mobile users should refrain from using their digital devices over a long period.

It’s hard for some people to reduce the amount of time of cellphone usage.

That’s why screen filters, computer glasses, and filter applications were created. They’re designed to shield your eyes from the blue light.

What Can You Do About Harmful Blue Light Exposure?

Reduce Blue,Add Red - (Done by Samsung to its screens from Galaxy S10)
Go Darker at Night (Dark Mode In Phone)

The blue light you get from natural sunlight can be good for you because it comes with the full light spectrum, including therapeutic red and near infrared light. Natural blue light is especially important for regulating your vital circadian rhythm, the term for your body’s asleep-awake cycle.

Blue light from Screens has done amazing things for our lighting and electronics, but our bodies and sleep cycles pay the price when we overload with artificial blue wavelengths at the wrong times.

Red > Blue When it Comes to Health - (for screens)

so

Blue Light Filter shift the colour tone of smartphones. The harmful Blue light is converted to orange, red, or yellow.

They also reduce screen brightness and protect your retina from blue light penetration.

In Short: The Blue light filter decreases the amount of blue light displayed on the screen of the device.

Blue Light Filter is available From Android OS Version 7.0 (Nougat) in Samsung Galaxy Phones.

Cons of having a Blue Light Filter:

-It is difficult for the human eyes to focus when the true colour is distorted.

-contrast reduction can be inconvenient for some people.

At the end of the day (literally), it’s probably just better to stop using your phone instead of using this. You’ll sleep better - by Ben Schoon.
