Introducing F-Droid

F-Droid is an installable catalogue of FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) applications for the Android platform. The client makes it easy to browse, install, and keep track of updates on your device.

I've used F-droid for a long while, open source apps aren't as good as Play Store counterparts; just that you can mod the source code and enhance according to your need and also distribute the modded app. That's the only benefit.

because they lack funding and people don't use them like Playstore rivals

It is that a single person can't create apps as good as a whole team trained for this sole purpose. Open source apps may be good in terms for privacy, experimentation and are free of cost but lack features in daily use, most of which are present in competing apps. I say this from experience, I have used open source on Android, Linux (Right upto 20.04FF) and media servers like Jellyfin (Windows) but never developed a special liking to them.
