This is a question that many Samsung Galaxy users have asked, especially since Apple introduced the feature with iOS 16. While Samsung's One UI offers extensive lock screen customization through the native settings and the Good Lock app, a seamless, one-tap "depth effect" like Apple's is not yet a standard feature. Here are the main reasons why Samsung has not added a simple, native depth effect wallpaper option for the lock screen: 1. Different Design Philosophy Apple's approach with iOS is to provide a highly polished, curated user experience. When they introduce a new feature like the depth effect, it's designed to work flawlessly with a specific set of images and under very controlled conditions. Samsung, on the other hand, has a more "open" design philosophy with One UI. They give users more tools and freedom to customize through apps like Good Lock, where modules like LockStar allow you to manually place elements like the clock, widgets, and stickers. The logic is that you can achieve a similar effect, but you have to do the work yourself. This is a trade-off between simplicity and flexibility. 2. Technical Complexity Creating a true "depth effect" is technically complex. The system has to: * Automatically identify the foreground subject in any given photo. * Accurately cut out the subject from the background. * Render the clock and other elements behind the subject. * Do all of this in real-time, instantly, and with a wide variety of photos. While Apple has managed to do this, it's a resource-intensive process. Samsung's One UI is designed to run on a massive range of devices, from entry-level phones to high-end flagships. Implementing a feature that would work flawlessly across this entire spectrum of hardware is a significant challenge. 3. Focus on Manual Customization Samsung's LockStar module in Good Lock is the closest you can get to this feature. It allows you to create the depth effect manually by: * Using the Samsung Gallery to automatically "clip" a person or object from a photo and save it as a sticker. * In the LockStar editor, setting the background wallpaper first. * Then adding the clipped image as a sticker and placing it over the clock or other elements to create the illusion of depth. This method gives users more control over the final look, but it's not as simple as a single toggle switch. 4. Awaiting Future One UI Updates There is a strong demand for this feature, and Samsung is very aware of it. It's possible that a future version of One UI (perhaps One UI 7 or 😎 could bring a more native and simplified version of this feature, possibly using advanced AI to automate the process, similar to how it handles other photo-editing tasks. However, until then, the "manual" approach via Good Lock remains the primary solution.
