Position the subject in a well-lit environment with a good contrasting background for the edge detection to work as intended. The current tech is limited and this is the best you could do (Same goes for iP8Plus and Pixel2)

Live focus lets you take beautiful bokeh shots where you make your subject stand out. If you're not entirely satisfied, you always have the option to adjust the level of background blur afterwards. Let’s take a look at how to use Live Focus to produce some stellar shots. - Tap the Live Focus option above the shutter. The phone will switch modes, utilizing the Note 8’s 2x optical zoom capability to close in the subject. - Use the slider above the shutter to control the strength of the background blur. The viewfinder will reflect any adjustments you make so you have a rough idea of what to expect before snapping a picture. Also, When shooting in Live Focus mode, there are a few things to be aware of. Your Note 8 needs to be about 4 feet away from the subject — neither any farther nor closer — for Live Focus to work. The scene also must be adequately lit. If these conditions aren’t met, you can’t capture a Live Focus picture. Be sure to hit ♡ when you find an answer that works for you.
