Yeah it helps with battery and data usage. Sleeping apps means the background process of those app will be halted till u run them and they won't put extra load on system.
the apps that are not used for quite a significant amount of time are kept to be sleeping (not active) thus saving battery by disabling any background data consumption by those apps
