I'll do this twice. Before downloading/installing the Oreo OS and after Oreo installation..

Everything in the internal memory will be erased. All contacts, accounts, sms, call logs will be erased. All app data will be erased, setting will become the Default as it was in the New condition.

If you have your contacts saved in Google Account, they'll be restored after adding the same account after Reset. You can backup your SMS, Samsung Notes in Samsung Account, and will be restored after adding the Samsung Account.

Photos, you can save/backup to another place (external SD card, PC or USB backup) or into Google Photos. Or you also can Upload to Google Drive.

If you don't have your contacts saved in Google account, you can Export your Contacts to a VCF file on SD card. Look into the Three dot menu in Contact app > Settings > Import/Export..... Export on SD and keep the VCF file safe.

After resetting, import the VCF file... Done....
Else, you can move contacts to Google Account.

And Yes. Factory Reset is necessary to wipe cache and Dalvik/ART, Data partition to install a new OS without any flaw.
