Does your home theatre have HDMI CEC which will allow it to be switched off when the TV does switch off. If not it won't work. Make sure that the function is also activated on the TV.

Its connected via optic cable...
During setup of universal remote, I can switch the home theater on and off via TV remote.
I can control the volume of the home theater once it's on. Problem is I can't switch the TV remote from turning off the TV to turning on the Home theater.
The home theater remote has a TV and DVD button to switch between both but it's too big to keep lying around that's why I prefer the smaller TV remote

You have chosen a different route, but the simple way is via HDMI if your home theatre supports it. Your remote is the issue here.
