Launched in September 2014, mobile operator T-Mobile pioneered the next-generation Wi-Fi Calling solution. This is a paradigm shift for Wi-Fi Calling as it is now implemented with native support embedded in the smartphones and working seamlessly through any Wi-Fi connection. Text messaging (SMS) also works in this way.

[ ] What is Wi-Fi Calling?

Wi-Fi Calling has been around for a long time. Voice calls have been transmitted over Wi-Fi either in the form of OTT applications such as Skype or as initiatives such as UMA and femtocells to enhance the reach of mobile voice services in subscribers’ homes.

The problem with OTT applications from an operator’s perspective is that the operator loses control. The UMA / femtocell initiatives have proven to be too expensive lacking widespread support among phone manufacturers. In an ideal world voice calling should be totally seamless for the user, built-in natively in the device and work over any network connection.

[ ] How does it works??

When Wi-Fi calling is turned on or enabled on your mobile device, all of the Wi-Fi networks that the device connects to do the work that would otherwise be handled by cell phone towers. Wi-Fi calling allows you to make high-quality phone calls (and send texts and other media) to people who are connected to a Wi-Fi network.

Placing a Wi-Fi call it’s just like placing a regular cellphone call. There is no need to log in, and typically no need to use an app to get the job done.

[ ] Pros and Cons of wifi calling?

[ ] Pros:-
In well-insulated buildings or underground, the signal strength of the mobile network is often not sufficient to make a normal telephone call. Since WLAN is now available in almost all buildings and at many underground stations, you can simply switch to the WiFi calling function to make a good quality call.

[ ] Cons:-
The disadvantage of WiFi calling is that you have to log into an additional network. There is also discussion as to whether WLAN radiation is harmful to health. It is therefore not everyone's cup of tea to keep their WLAN router permanently in operation.

CONCLUSION:-

Service providers have no control over the quality of a WiFi network, therefore they may face challenges to troubleshoot WiFi issues. Experts reckon that this issue can be overcome by making use of an app that can monitor WiFi network quality and revoke service when below thresholds.

AS OF NOW ONLY JIO AND AIRTEL ARE ABLE TO PROVIDE VoWifi( Wifi Calling)

THANKYOU!!!
