To get started, open the Messages app and create a new message. Touch the Enter message field and then touch the Smiley icon. Swipe left to view all the emoji screens, and prepare to feast your eyes on all the emojis at your fingertips.

Novice phone users (hi, Grandma!) can dip a toe into the world of emojis by starting out with these standard picks. By far the most adorable category, the award goes to…animals! From jungle animals to sea-faring creatures to plants – which are not technically animals – find the furry or feathered friend that speaks to you. What’s your spirit animal? Make it your signature emoji!
