Every year, we see 'improvements' in hardware capabilities in terms of numbers, and we tend to believe how the technology has been improving each year, and how they are improving our quality of life.

But have you ever been presented with data on how such calculations are done, and the science behind it, so you can independently verify its authenticity?

Year after year, Apple claims how it's newest device is x% better than its previous generation in terms of performance, how it is y% better than its previous generation in terms of battery life, etc.

Same holds true for other chip makers like Qualcomm, Mediatek, AMD, Intel, etc.

About 7 years back, I used to get about 4 to 5 hours SOT on my phone. If we assume Battery life has been improved each year @ 10% per year, by now we should be getting twice the battery life than the devcies that existed then (power of compounding). But that hasn't happened. Even today, the average battery life is just in that region of 4 to 5 hours SOT. And this is despite the batteries today being actually bigger and supposedly more efficient.

One can argue that the quality of apps and games have improved drastically, and requires greater CPU and GPU use. Over the same period, chip makers have also been consistently insisting how their newer chips have better CPU and GPU performance, year on year. So where did all those improvements go?

Only a very small % of users actually game on their phones. But even those who don't game on their phones, haven't seen 'drastic' improvements in their user experience.

Benchmark tests is another highly questionable area. No one knows how those numbers are calculated. Everyone just takes those numbers on face value and starts blabbering on it. More importantly, these tests are largely unrelated to real-life use. And we don't know who the real owners of these apps are. May be these benchmarking apps are indirectly owned by Qualcomm (just a hypothetical possibility) who is manipulating these so-called tests to market their new chips each year.

My SD865 phone is just as good as my SD 8 Gen 1 phone, in terms of performance and battery life. Probably heats less too. In between these two, we have the SD870, SD888 and SD888+, with each newer version supposedly bringing improvements over the predecessor in several areas. Those improvements are only seen in benchmark numbers (which can easily be manipulated). In real-life use, there is absolutely no improvements seen!

BOTTOMLINE

Sure there are improvements in several areas of the gadget experience. But are they worthy enough to consider upgrades every year or so? Do they actually provide any meaningful improvements in user experience?

The answer to both questions is a clear NO.

All these tests and reviews are nothing more than marketing machinery of Big Tech, designed to promote consumerism and make people buy stuff they don't actually need, and which actually wouldn't make any significant improvements in user experience. But the marketing machinery is so powerful, that despite there being absolutely no need, people are still excited with product launches every single year.

Technology, far from saving the world from e-waste and protecting the environment, is actually doing the exact opposite - promoting consumerism and multiplying e-waste! And designing products that keep everyone glued to their smart gadgets, is the final nail in the coffin.

Use GPay then. Posting about it here isn't going to help with your problem. I'm not representing Samsung in any capacity.
