Galaxy Techfluencer topic for the week: Random Access Memory

RAM is an essential component that is used for the Read, Write/Modify or Execute operation. It could be an image, text file or any application. All of these are loaded to RAM before performing any operation. With RAM, operations can be done at a better speed resulting in better user experience.

Random Access Memory is the volatile memory to hold the active application related data, executables, program code and critical files that are needed by your machine to stay alive. These will be used by processor for performing any operation on the data and then it outputs the end result to the screen or performs an action as instructed by the user. In common terms the bootfile will be loaded into RAM which is run by the processor and subsequently other firmware files will be loaded which control the different input and output components and your operating system is ready for use. Now say for example a user opens a Pdf document on the machine then the related file will be loaded into the RAM and instructions will be processed to open the file and to be available to the user. Once the PDF is read and closed the document will be moved out of RAM and sometimes might be cached. So to make it clear anything required by processor would be copied to RAM and disposed once the instructions are completed by the processor. Like this several applications might be opened by the processor they all live in RAM based on the available memory. As RAM is near to processor used for running all the applications and is also costlier compared to disk. If the RAM is near to its full capacity then unimportant files would be moved to disk (virtual memory) and then performs operations that are currently are important and need to be performed. In such situations, machine becomes slow as the processor would need to copy the data from RAM to disk and vice versa (paging happens). So depending on your requirement RAM size would play a greater role in the performance of your machine. It is volatile which means the memory will be wiped off once the program is no longer needed or if the machine is switched off. Once you turn on the machine again the whole process starts from booting to run the applications. Two types of RAM exists and they are SRAM and DRAM where the static RAM will be used for cache and dynamic RAM as the physical memory.
