MIMO stands for multiple-input, multiple-output antenna. It increases the number of antennas on a radio.

By creating multiple receive and transmit paths between the base station and the end device, it allows to improve spectral efficiency per cell and the number of users who can be served simultaneously.
This raises the peak and average cell throughput. And with massive MIMO comes beamforming technology, which allows for the focusing of radio signals on specific user devices.
As a result, interference is reduced and signal quality, especially at cell edge, is improved
