This is a recent development and there are no clear answers yet.

A very popular File Manager app - TOTAL COMMANDER - has received a takedown notice from Google for its ability to sideload apps:

Is Google trying to block sideloading of apps? Despite being user friendly for years which is one major factor why most users love Android, Google and other big brands eventually copy Apple to the detriment of its users.

Does anyone have any idea on what's happening?

You too have something to worry. Apple keeps blocking jail-breaking on iOS devices. Since everyone copies Apple, Google too may make rooting increasingly difficult and painful. I don't think that's too far.

Huawei was the first one to stop supporting bootloader unlocking. Other brands too are making it difficult these days.

And if Google makes it difficult at Android level, it will be a universal problem. And i think that too will happen soon.
