Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi), a new embark for India.

#GalaxyTechfluencer

VoWi-Fi stands for voice over (EPC-integrated) Wi-Fi. VoWi-Fi is a complementary technology to VoLTE which utilises IMS technology to provide a packet voice service that is delivered over IP via a Wi-Fi network. VoLTE calls may be seamlessly handed over between LTE and Wi-Fi and vice versa.

The technology has been available for some time but operators have been hesitant. New business models allow for flat-fee voice services, combined with the realization that users will use OTT applications for calls as much as they can, has removed the last obstacle for taking Wi-Fi Calling to the next level.

In September 2014, mobile operator T-Mobile pioneered this next-generation Wi-Fi Calling solution. This is a paradigm shift for Wi-Fi Calling as it is now implemented with native support embedded in the smartphones and working seamlessly through any Wi-Fi connection.

What are the main benefits of VoWi-Fi for Consumers?

Can make calls without the need for a mobile signal (e.g. in a remote location or in a property with thick walls).

Can make WiFi calls to the anyone regardless of their phone supporting WiFi Calling or not. The recipient can be on any network, be it 2G/3G/4G/ etc.

Can use the existing phone number.

Seamless call transfer support between Wi-Fi and LTE (using VoLTE) and specific support in the device.

Experience better indoor coverage.

Enables non-subscriber – i.e. no SIM – devices like Wi-Fi tablets to make calls.

Enables free calls from overseas locations.

VoWiFi is an inexpensive way for mobile operators to augment services inside buildings – particularly residential units – when macro network signals don’t penetrate well.

Wi-Fi works in unlicensed frequency bands, so VoWiFi can be implemented without wireless operator permission or involvement.

VoWiFi leverages an investment that, in most cases, has already been made by the enterprise – their Wi-Fi network – so incremental spend may be minimal.

As long as the user has a device which supports VoWifi, the service is universal – it’s not specific to any one operator, but can be used by anyone with a device that supports it and is granted access to the Wi-Fi network
