Android is the most popular mobile operating system used by millions of users today. For years, APK has not only been used by developers but also users to seamlessly share apps without the need to download them. As per reports Google is planning to discontinue the popular APK format this year.

APK is popular among Android users, the company has embraced better methods of distributing Android apps known as Android App Bundles which were introduced earlier in 2018. As per reports it is now compulsory for new apps to use App Bundles with AAB format. However, existing apps can still leverage the APK format.

App Bundles were introduced to manage an issue with APKs a few years ago. When apps added features, they grew in size. With App Bundles, it became possible to only deliver the elements required by the user.

The user only has to download a bundle containing support instead of downloading the entire APK. Users benefit a lot from this as the files are optimised and offer a faster download speed while consuming less space.

However, this can be challenging for developers as they need to re-package their apps as APK files. Developers are also required to provide Google the key to sign into their apps, which raises security concerns for the apps.
