Tech TalkGoogle Play Store is full of rubbish apps, and a very large majority of apps are simply replicas of each other with a different signature. Take for example the Gallery app. I have tried out hundreds of these, and found that less than 10 are unique. All the rest and perfect replicas of each other.
Lousy developers pick up some open source library, inject ads, repackage them with their own signature, and publish them on Google Play Store. There is zero value addition to the project, and the end product is nothing more than an ad-based revenue source without doing any work, and providing zero value to the end user.
People just install apps, blindly grant them permissions the apps ask for (without understanding the purpose of those permissions and the implications of granting the same), and then experience the same set of problems - heating, battery drain, lagging, etc.
An example would be a music app that asks for microphone permissions. There is absolutely no need for that permission, and an app that refuses to work if it doesn't get an unnecessary permission, should be uninstalled. That app is doing a lot more than what it is being installed for. The result? It uses your hardware and reduces its life without providing any benefit in return. And more importantly, it does all that clandestinely.
When you are careful with the apps you install, and configure your system to grant only the necessary permissions (best thing would be to uninstall apps that ask for unnecessary permissions), control which apps can run in the background, etc., you'll see that a lot of the commonly reported complaints just don't appear on your device.
Hope this provides the elaboration you requested for.
I have a post which contains links to common mistakes people make, and how to avoid them. That post has been linked in the OP. Check it out.

Tech TalkYes, the users can change some settings to get a little more juice but major improvements will come when they choose not to use facilities available in the phone like 120hz refresh rate, Always on Display, QHD resolution, and CPU restrictions. That's not fair to pay for facilities and not use them.

Tech TalkI use FHD+ with adaptive 120 Hz refresh rate and AOD. I have been consistently getting over 6 hours SOT, although the standby time for that is 15 hours on average. I charge my phone twice daily.
So if two identical phones with identical software are providing a hugely different user experience, there likely are other factors in play. And apps are usually the culprit.
