China has been talking about plans to move from Windows operating systems to a system of its own design for several years. True, many years of attempts have not led to anything intelligible. Government agencies and citizens remain on Windows, but threaten to abandon it year after year.
The South China Morning Post reports that the Chinese government is planning to develop an operating system for personal computers that will eliminate Windows and macOS. Kylinsoft, the state-owned subsidiary of China Electronics Corp., is now responsible for the result. It works with local organizations such as the National Research Center for Industrial Information Security Development. Its main goal is to create an open source community called "openKylin" to encourage programmers to contribute.
Now the share of Windows in China is 85%, while macOS has a little more than 6%. There are several Linux distributions, each with a share well below 1%. Kylinsoft developed Kylin Linux in collaboration with the National University of Defense Technology, but this is of little use.China's future success in developing its operating system is in doubt. The country is known for producing anything and everything in terms of hardware, but in terms of software, its success is not so noticeable. In Kylin, at one time more than 99% was taken from FreeBSD, which did not have the best effect on the reputation of the system and its "developers". Modern versions of this system are based on Linux and have a Windows and macOS style user interface. Even names like Kylin V10 Service Pack 1 are reminiscent of Microsoft 20 years ago.In China itself, not everyone is optimistic about the new project. Beijing-based analyst Liu Dingding says it will be difficult to challenge Windows and macOS. It is even more difficult to create an ecosystem of applications for the operating system, which Huawei knows about with the HarmonyOS system and the AppGallery store
