Smartphone companies can completely get rid of the charging port,  buttons, holes(except Microphones).

The charging will be done by Wireless charging and they should improve the rate of Wireles charging and speed it up.
Also, they can get rid of any buttons as well.
A complete edge to edge smartphone with just screen, back panel and no buttons.
And plain side surfaces. To wake up the phone, double, tap the screen instead of Pressing the power button. To increase the volume, there can be toggle inside the UI or there can be sensitive side Panel just like there is on the Earbuds and some redmagic mobiles.
To switch it up shake the phone, tech used in Motorola phones to turn on flash light or maybe using a timer while switching off, that the phone will restart after say 2 minutes, 10 minutes etc
Wireless file transfer should be enhanced instead of using wire. The sim card should also be in built eSIM.
There will only be few hole' for the microphones

(Its just an idea, can be used on a feature phone or experimental phone)

It won't be able to do such.... As all govt wants a single charging support for all devices.

If the phone hangs it would be difficult to safe boot without a power button. A physical power button is a must for any gadget from a phone to an airplane 🙂

Wireless charging is bad for lithium ion batteries. There is a lot of science taking place like eddy currents rule. You should also look into the practical side as a wireless charger is not for everyones cup of tea. Unless we find a new material which is better than lithium ion battery, it will be the same for all smartphones and even electric cars
