2020 looks likely to be a busy year for Samsung, with the company expected to launch a number of smartphones across various budget segments this year. While most of these are expected to be regular glass and metal slabs, one or two could be foldable smartphones.
While until now, we had heard about the company unveiling a successor to the Galaxy Fold at its February unpacked event in 2020, there are now reports that the company could even launch an all-new clamshell foldable smartphone ahead of that date.
Interestingly, the report claims that the phone will be launched in February but before the company launches the S11 series. However, the report suggests that the device will initially be made available only in South Korea and then later announce it in the other major markets across the globe.
Reports also suggest that more details about the device could be shared in the coming weeks, while availability and pricing could be announced at the company’s Unpacked event that’s scheduled to be hosted in the United States in February.
There are suggestions that the device could bring with it a 6.7-inch display and will become nearly square-shaped when folded. Apart from this, there is no information about the internals of the smartphone or the cameras it could come packing.
But reports do hint at the pricing of the phone, which could be quite a bit cheaper than that of the Galaxy Fold’s which came with a price tag of around $2,000 ( Rs 1,64,990 in India). In comparison, this new foldable smartphone from Samsung will be made available in the mid-$1,000 range, and thus represent an affordable buy when compared to the Galaxy Fold.
However, it would be prudent to say that the report, and it claims, should be taken with a pinch of salt, especially considering the timelines involved in the launch of the new clamshell smartphone. Having said that, it cannot be ignored that Samsung could very likely launch two foldable smartphones in 2020 to counter Huawei and Motorola both of which are expected to launch two foldable devices of their own in the coming year.
