I have had my phone without any issues for over 2 years and last night was the first time my phone froze for hours. I am not happy with the software update and wish to go back.

Have you tried the following:
Clear the system cache by switching off the phone and connecting it to a computer, then simultaneously press volume up + power key until the recovery menu pops up, then use volume down to scroll to 'wipe system cache' and use the power button to confirm. Then reboot the phone and it should be good to go
