Tried and tested on Galaxy note 10 plus with Vodafone Sim and pixel 2 with airtel sim. As you can see in the screenshot, I can see the other person typing.

You need Google's messaging app and that too beta version. You can sign up for the beta version from play store itself.

It's not about being right or wrong dude. You might be missing something. It is working with some note 9 users as well. And yes, the Google messaging app is not at all buggy. I got it working on 2 devices and hence I posted this. Thought it of sharing since few people would actually like to try it.
