New M31 received from Amazon yesterday, did a Samsung copy from old phone, bypassed Samsung account set up and skiped setting an unlock password - so phone at the end of day 1 the phone was left on, not turned off because it kept asking for an unlock password even though none had been set up.

Next day, today, screen was off, and wanted a password to unlock, but because none was set up yesterday I cannot get in to phone.  Does that mean I have to factory reset and start again?  Decided the answer is yes, but recovery mode (pressing power+voldown) needs phone to be off to start with - I cannot turn off power because after holding power button and then pressing red power circle on screen (twice) it asks for the non-existent password number again.

How do I regain control of the phone, I think the answer involves factory reset but I cannot get it to recovery mode using instructions, for instance this does not work (remember I cannot start from powered off):  "press volume down key+power key for 7 seconds, after vibration sensed, change hand to volume up key, it will enter into recovery mode." (that instruction came from https://r2.community.samsung.com/t5/Galaxy-M/Samsung-M30s-not-able-to-put-in-Recovery-Mode/td-p/3834...

OK now - timing seems very critical, in that one has to switch from power+voldown to none to power+volup v quickly and during the 1 sec or less when the screen is black. We had this instruction as email followup from another chat which gave the timing clue we needed: First, you need to press and hold the power button and volume down to restart the device. Once the screen gone black and act to restart, release the buttons then quickly press and hold (Power Button & Volume Up, plus home or bixby button on other phones types that have those).

Recovery mode requires a lot more steps not than power+ volume down

Guys, could you give me the precise instructions, after the recent update to 3.1? I think it's changed. Thanks in advance.
