encryption and decryption works together. If you encrypted your card, it creates a key which can be used to decrypt the card. This key is visible only to the system not user. This key had to be unique else anyone can decrypt it. Now for whatever reason you encrypted your card, a random but unique system key was created which was to be used for decryption. Now you have formatted you system. So the random key for decrypting the card is now gone. Due to which you cannot decrypt the card anymore. Its similar to change in DNA in every generation in humans, but irreversible.

1.On a PC: Copy (the encrypted and unreadable) contents of the sd card from the phone to your harddrive

2.On the phone: Settings -> Storage -> Sd Card -> Format sd card (this erases all the data on the sd card but don't worry you have a copy on the PC)

3.On the phone: Settings -> Security -> Encrypt sd Card (should be real fast since it's an empty sd card)

4.On the PC: Copy the contents of the sd card onto the phone

5.On the phone: Settings -> Security -> Decrypt sd card (edit: this may take a while depending on how much data was on the card)

After that I was able to view all the files I had on the sd card!

I hope your data is back

I've created an account for the sole purpose of letting everyone know that in 2022, on a Samsung Galaxy S10, this does not work. My phone wiped itself because of my corporate app security and I have 1500 photos (most backed up, some recent ones not) currently encrypted and inaccessible. There might be some other software options but it's definitely not this easy. This solution is all over the internet but does not work.
