If i install a malicious app that contains a virus, will my original device data outside the secure folder also stand compromised? Or only data i side secure folder is compromised?

It's all depends on App permission and code inside it. But it can't alter core system files until root unlock.

There is very less chance of a virus attack on Android. So don't worry and use your phone. Android platform is based on Linux platform which is safe from virus.
