A big super-middleweight bout takes place on Saturday
The best fight at 168lbs without Canelo Alvarez takes place on Saturday night as David
Benavidez faces the biggest test of his career against Caleb Plant.
Outside of Canelo Alvarez, the 26-year-old Benavidez is generally regarded as the premier
168-pound fighter in the world. The two-time WBC super middleweight king has an
immaculate 26-0 (23 KOs) record, blazing hand speed, concussive hitting power, and the type
of presence that has many fans and experts convinced he’s a superstar in waiting.
The 30-year-old Plant (22-1, 13 KOs) is also an elite-level player in this weight class. The
former IBF champ suffered his only loss at the hands of Canelo but bounced back in emphatic
fashion to score a Knockout of the Year contender over former titleholder Anthony Dirrell.
“Sweethands” has adept movement, quality technique, and bundles of ring craft.
According to SkyBet, Benavidez is the -250 favourite, whereas Plant is the +750 underdog.
However, opinions vary on how this matchup will play out. The Sporting News reached out to
their in-house boxing experts to provide some insight into this intriguing super middleweight
collision and offer their thoughts on who will emerge victorious:
David Benavidez vs. Caleb Plant expert picks
This is the perfect clash of styles between two fighters who clearly don't like each other.
As great as he is, the issue for Plant is that he will have to fight an absolutely perfect fight for
12 rounds in order to raise his hands in victory. He lacks the power to hurt Benavidez and will
have to rely heavily on his movement and speed to keep "The Mexican Monster" off balance.
The problem is that Benavidez is a fighter who is a lot like a snowball rolling downhill that
eventually becomes a full-blown avalanche. If Plant can't gain his respect early, expect
Benavidez to walk him down and pummel his bitter rival along the ropes. The accumulation
of punishment will eventually become too much for Plant to overcome and he (or his corner)
will be forced to succumb in the latter half of the fight.
Plant is incredibly adept as a boxer-mover but executing that type of style takes a lot of
energy. And when you have a rampaging Benavidez chasing you down, the last thing you
want to run low on fuel.
I think Plant has improved since the loss to Canelo, but I'm not sure it'll be enough to hand
Benavidez his first loss. I can see it being very competitive in the first half, but I expect
Benavidez to grind Plant down for a late stoppage win.
Benavidez is as dangerous as they come. He has a +/- rating of 16.7, the fourth-best mark in
boxing. The former champion averages the fourth-most total punches landed per round with
25.6 and is ranked first in total connect percentage at 38.4%. That has resulted in an 88%
knockout ratio. However, Plant’s opposition lands the sixth-fewest total punches per round
with 7.3. He also allows the ninth-fewest power punches landed per round in all of boxing at
5.5. Plant has speed and the edge when it comes to inside shots in the clinch, while Benavidez
likes to stalk his opponent from afar, landing the perfect amount of volume blows when
needed.
If the fight goes the distance, expect Plant to take it home. A fight that ends in the early
rounds would be from a Benavidez knockout. Benavidez can also play it smart, ending it in
the middle rounds if he can neutralize Plant. Plant may have improved since his loss to
Canelo, but Benavidez has enough motivation, power, and durability to get the win.
Benavidez’s status as the bookies’ favorite for this fight is understandable. After all, he’s the
bigger, younger and heavier boxer. The WBC ‘interim’ champ has pledged to start fast and go
for the early knockout and the bad blood between the fighters means there is no reason not
to take him at his word. Plant might have to come through some heavy weather early on but
the Nashville native has grit to match his easy-on-the-eye skills.
If he can use his lead hand with effective and intelligent variety, Plant can frustrate Benavidez
and pinch rounds if the fight goes long, providing he controls the distance at center ring for
long enough to stay out of sustained danger on the ropes. He might have to get up off the
canvas to see it out, but my pick is for Caleb to nick a split decision amid demands for these
two best of enemies to run it back.
Plant was impressively more aggressive when he beat Anthony Dirrell under new trainer
Stephen Edwards in October, albeit against a faded opponent who was also knocked out in
the ninth round by Benavidez. Edwards says he has an effective gameplan against Benavidez,
which you suspect will incorporate Plant staying out of the line of frequent fire without tiring
late on in the way he did to costly effect against Canelo Alvarez. It would be unsurprising if
Benavidez, whose demeanour in the build-up has been even less likeable than seeing Plant
mock grave-digging while Dirrell was being attended to, found a seventh successive finish.
But Plant is not as much of an underdog as the odds suggest and I envisage victory for him on
points if Edwards and his fighter get those tactics right.
Final David Benavidez vs. Caleb Plant prediction
In the end, it's Benavidez who narrowly gets the edge with a final tally of 3-2. While
Benavidez certainly packs some punch and could look to score the early stoppage, our writers
agree that this fight should approach the championship rounds. Can Benavidez score another
win and move to an impressive 27-0? Or will 'Sweethands' Plant outlast the hard-hitting
Benavidez and score a second straight win following the lone blemish against Canelo?
