Factory Reset: Factory resets are generally done to remove the data entirely from a device, the device is to be started again and requires the need of re installation of the software. Agar samsya bahut badi nahi hai to hard reset aur agar samasya pure system me hai to factory reset..

so it totally depends on what issues are you facing..

normally people doing factory reset
but when your phone stuck or not response properly then you have to do factory reset by physical button instead of using settings that is called hard reset

Factory data reset: as name suggests deletes entire data of device and makes device to factory version.. Complete setup is needed.

Hard reset: both are same but hard reset is recommended only when if there is any system issue and you are not able to boot into device or open settings .. If you can't boot you can't open settings. So, no option you have to go to recovery and do hard reset.
