Galaxy S24 has been released.
A year after the S23 was launched, it has finally been released.
Among the features installed in the Galaxy S24, there is one very interesting feature that I would like to introduce.
This is the “Digital ND Filter”.
- What is an ND filter?
First, let’s look at the ND (Neutral Density) filter:
It is a type of filter that reduces the light entering the camera by placing black glass in front of the camera lens.
When we encounter a situation that is too bright when taking pictures, we use the pictures without adjusting the brightness as we want.
In photography, I use it when I want to outfocus the way I want, or when I want to express the traces or flow of light with a long exposure.
Until now, to use this function, you had to install a physical ND filter in front of the camera to reduce the light entering the camera.
However, with the Galaxy S24, you can use this function without a physical ND filter.
You can use it right away by pressing a button in Expert RAW.
How is this technically possible?
There is a very detailed article on this part from Samsung, but to summarize briefly:
After shooting quickly, the photos are combined to make it look like an ND filter was used.
Let's take an example.
When I said I took a picture of 4 seconds,
During that time, it fires at a tremendous rate.
We use a method of gathering those dense images to create something like a long exposure photo.
So, it has almost the same effect as actual ND.
When taking pictures, I want to use an ND filter in daylight, but it's really annoying to carry around.
When do I buy and install an external ND?
In that case, you can take out your Galaxy S24 and use the Digital ND filter with Expert RAW.
Of course, since this is a long exposure photo, a tripod is essential.
- How to use it in real life
If you want to use this Digital ND filter well, it is perfect for this situation.
- When you want to delete a person.
There are times when I go to a very famous spot and there are too many people, right?
When you want to erase all those people, use this ND filter to take pictures.
Since the person becomes a trace, only the building is captured.
- You can take pictures of landscapes and buildings without people.
When taking pictures of a Christmas tree and wanting to erase all the people passing by, just set the shutter speed to 4 seconds and press the shutter button, and all the people will disappear.
Of course, when using the built-in ND, the lowest shutter speed is 4 seconds, so very long exposures are not possible.
Those who remain still cannot be erased,
To a certain extent, almost everyone passing by can be erased.
- When you want to take pictures of something flowing
This is helpful when taking pictures of flowing water, fountains, or the sea.
If you take a picture of a flowing fountain, you will get a different picture because all of its traces will be captured.
Just like these photos.
It also helps when taking pictures of waterfalls.
If you just take a picture of a regular waterfall, it might not be fun because it's still there.
However, if you take a picture using this function, you can take a picture of a flowing waterfall and get a special picture.
This is Hongjecheon Artificial Waterfall, and I was able to get great photos using this ND effect when taking pictures of this beautifully decorated artificial waterfall.
Of course, since everything is saved as a RAW file, you can adjust it to your liking.
This feature is also supported in beta version on Galaxy S23. So, some of you may have already used it.
However, what additional features have been added to the Galaxy S24?
An automatic ND mode has been created.
If you select Auto ND, it automatically sets the shutter speed, ISO, and ND filter strength that are just right for you.
This function helps even beginners who are not good at using this function to easily take long exposures.
When I see a great long exposure photo on Instagram or somewhere else and I want to take a photo like that but don't know what to do, I can use this Auto mode to very easily produce good results.
The advancement of technology is truly amazing, isn’t it?
Who would have imagined that there would be a smartphone that automatically creates ND filters like this?
Now, you can easily take long exposures with the Digital ND filter added to the Galaxy S24, right?
It was Mate Choi up to this point.
