Bringing Cinematic Color to Log Video

Four Cinematic Styles & Color Expression Techniques

Cinematic video is achieved not only through directing and camera movement, but also through the atmosphere created by ‘color.’

We offer four styles to help you capture a cinematic mood with your camera's Log Video.

These styles are Samsung's newly designed Cinema Looks (cinematic colors) for the mobile video environment, based on the principles of colors and emotional expression methods long used in film color correction.

1. Blockbuster

Intense and three-dimensional cinematic mood

The blockbuster style creates a cinematic mood with clear contrast by harmoniously placing cool blue-teal and warm orange tones across the screen.

Instead of dividing specific areas and applying color to them, it was designed to distribute color throughout the image to allow for a natural coexistence of cool and warm colors. This prevents the scene from appearing flat, creating a cinematic sense of depth and three-dimensionality.

The blue series adds a subtle cyan tone to create a modern feel, and the orange series is kept understated to create an urban and sophisticated blockbuster tone.

[Recommended Filming Environments]

  • Night streets, cityscapes
  • Scenes with streetlights and car lights
  • Environments with a mix of blue and orange lighting

2. Teen Dramas

The gentle and delicate sensibility of a coming-of-age film.

The high-teen drama style focuses on soft gradations and balanced colors rather than strong contrasts.

Contrast is kept to a minimum, and colors are distributed naturally without being overly flashy, emphasizing the clear and calm atmosphere characteristic of pastel tones.

The video overall looks comfortable and allows for capturing everyday moments with a sensible touch.

[Recommended Filming Environments]

  • Daytime routines, walks, and travel
  • Natural moments with friends and family
  • Bright, soft, and natural lighting

3. Romance

A warm and emotional mood

The Romance style evenly spreads a warm energy across the scene, creating a cozy and stable atmosphere. Its warm tones naturally transition from light to dark, and its smooth gradation (brightness levels, gradations) conveys emotions effectively, creating a warm quality. These characteristics make it ideal for videos that convey a sense of human warmth.

[Recommended Filming Environments]

  • Sunset, indoor lighting, and warm light like candlelight
  • Emotional scenes focused on people
  • Daily vlogs and documentary footage

4. Thriller

A dark and suspenseful cinematic atmosphere

The thriller style uses restrained colors and emphasizes contrast to create a heavy, gritty cinematic atmosphere. By lowering overall saturation and sharply highlighting the contrast between light and dark areas, the focus shifts from flashiness to atmosphere and immersion. This style is ideal for scenes that emphasize story and emotion.

[Recommended Filming Environments]

  • Dark indoors and night scenes
  • Textured spaces such as concrete, metal, or rough walls
  • Videos that emphasize tension and immersion rather than bright and fancy colors

How are cinematic styles created?

- What is 3D LUT, the core technology for applying styles?

An LUT (Look-Up Table) is a map containing color conversion information, such as "Change this color to this."

Unlike typical filters that simply adjust brightness or color, 3D LUTs simultaneously transform brightness, color, and color intensity across three dimensions.

So even an original video that was intentionally shot dull, like a log video, can be expressed with accurate and consistent cinematic tones without losing color.

- What's the difference between SDR and HDR?

Even within the same style, the visual experience can vary significantly depending on how the image is presented (SDR or HDR). Therefore, all styles are designed separately for SDR and HDR, allowing users to choose the right one for their needs.

[SDR (for general videos)]

SDR is the standard video format most familiar to users.

Its natural and stable brightness makes it ideal for daily-life videos or documenting videos, making it widely used on smartphones, TVs, and most video platforms. Our SDR style expresses a cinematic style based on brightness flow that looks natural on most screens.

Simply put, it maintains a stable cinematic feel without colors popping out no matter what screen you watch it on.

[HDR (for High-Definition Video)]

HDR is a method that can express a wider range of brightness and color than SDR.

It expresses bright areas, such as sunlight and lighting, more vividly, while maintaining color and detail even in dark areas, making the scene appear closer to what the human eye sees. Our HDR style is based on the HLG method, widely used in HDR video, and exquisitely expresses a cinematic style based on a color standard (BT.2020, Ultra High Definition Color Standard) that can contain more colors.

In conclusion:

These four styles are newly designed cinematic styles based on technology suitable for the Galaxy mobile video environment, expressing colors that convey emotions.

Try applying just the mood you want to your Log video. Your video may look like a completely different story.
