One of the biggest things to consider when talking about the Android operating system, is the lack of nativemachinecode, and the virtualized nature of its architecture. (It is Open Source, at the end of the day).
That aspect multiplies hardware tax, and will always put it at a disadvantage compared to other operating systems like iOS and Windows. 😶🌫️
I agree that Android has to support a huge range of hardware, which makes optimization more challenging. At the same time, that's also one of Android's biggest strengths. It gives users many things to choose from. Since you are mentioning iOS which is mostly premium and flagships, I will also keep it in flagships on the Android side. Do you think the performance gap is still as noticeable today with modern flagship processors, or was it more of an issue a few years ago?
The hardware tax of Android's virtualized environment pushed smartphone manufacturers who were invested in the operating system to release bloated and expensive hardware in their smartphones. 🧐 But you're right, Android's adaptability is one of its strong suits, and supports the ecosystem of developers and tech enthusiasts very well 🎩, I mean, I'm able to play a game on my Android phone that wasn't even released for my device 🤔.
