If you had "Find device" installed and your location on. You can use another phone with this app, sign in with your Google account to locate your phone and erase data

If I erase data does not mean have left it open to that person who has gotten it?

I don't think so. It's more of a security feature so they don't get access to your personal information but they usually remove the battery. This happened to my friend, as he was tracking it, they turned it off and then wiped the phone so we couldn't track it anymore
