Galaxy SSubject: Software Update Error: "Unable to update the software. A network or server error occurred" on S21 FE 5G (USA)
Message:
"Hi everyone,
I am facing a second critical issue with my S21 FE 5G (USA Model). Since the December 18 security patch, I have been unable to check for or install any new software updates.
The Problem:
Whenever I go to Settings and tap on 'Download and install', I immediately get the following error message:
'Unable to update the software. A network or server error occurred. Try again later.'
Impact:
This issue has persisted for a while now. It is particularly frustrating because I am also dealing with system bugs (like the Game Booster issue I mentioned in my other post), and I was hoping a new update would provide a fix. Now, I am completely stuck and cannot receive any OTA (Over-The-Air) updates.
Additional Info:
- I have tried switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data, but the error remains the same.
- The issue started specifically after the December 18 security update.
Is this a known server issue for the USA variant, or is there a way to force the updater to work again without a factory reset?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Galaxy Syou’re not the only one. After the December 18 security patch, several Galaxy S21 FE 5G (USA model) users have reported the same “Unable to update the software. A network or server error occurred” message. Let’s break down what’s happening and what you can try:
Why This Happens
Server-side glitch: Sometimes Samsung’s update servers temporarily block certain CSC (region/carrier codes).
Corrupted update cache: The patch may have left behind corrupted files that prevent new updates from downloading.
Carrier restrictions: U.S. models often depend on carrier approval (Verizon, AT&T, T‑Mobile). If the carrier hasn’t signed off, the phone throws this error.
Software bug: A bug in the December patch itself may be interfering with the update check process.
Steps to Fix
Reset Network Settings
Settings → General management → Reset → Reset network settings.
This refreshes the connection to Samsung’s servers.
Check Carrier SIM
Make sure the SIM is active and matches the CSC. Sometimes swapping SIMs (e.g., inserting the original U.S. carrier SIM) allows updates to resume.
Samsung Smart Switch (PC/Mac)
Install Smart Switch on your computer.
Connect your phone → Update software option.
This bypasses OTA and often succeeds when the phone itself fails.
Samsung Members Diagnostics
In Samsung Members → Support → Phone diagnostics → Software update test.
This can confirm if the issue is server-side or device-side.
⚠️ If Nothing Works
Carrier lock: If your device is carrier-branded, you may need to wait until that carrier pushes the next OTA.

Galaxy SBefore trying anything complex, clear the temporary data that might be causing the "Server Error."
Reset Network Settings: This clears saved Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and mobile data configurations without deleting your personal files. Go to Settings > General management > Reset > Reset network settings. Wipe Cache Partition: This removes temporary system files that may have been corrupted during the December update. Turn off your phone. Connect it to a computer via USB cable (this is often required for newer Samsung models to enter recovery mode). Press and hold Volume Up + Power until the Samsung logo appears. Use volume buttons to highlight Wipe cache partition and Power to select. Select Yes, then Reboot system now. Phase 2: The "Force Update" Method (Using a PC)
If the on-device software is "broken," you can bypass the phone's internal updater by using Samsung Smart Switch on a Windows or Mac computer.
Download and install Smart Switch on your computer. Connect your S21 FE to the computer via a high-quality USB cable. If an update is available, Smart Switch will detect it immediately and show an Update button on the home screen. This method is much more stable than OTA (Over-The-Air) updates because it downloads the full firmware package to your PC first. Phase 3: Check for "Date and Time" Conflicts
It sounds silly, but if your phone's internal clock is even slightly off from the server's clock, the security handshake will fail.
Go to Settings > General management > Date and time. Ensure Automatic date and time is toggled ON. If it's already on, toggle it off and then back on. If nothing works:
The December patch may have partially corrupted your OS. If Smart Switch doesn't recognize the phone or fails to update, your last resort before a physical repair would be a Factory Data Reset.
Warning: Back up all your data to the cloud or a PC first, as this will wipe your device.

Galaxy SThank you for providing additional details regarding the software update error on your device.
As your Galaxy S21 FE 5G is a USA-origin model, its software updates and server authorizations are managed directly by Samsung US and the original mobile carrier. The "network or server error" you are experiencing is likely due to a regional mismatch or a specific restriction with the USA update servers.
To resolve this and receive the correct firmware for your specific variant, we recommend contacting Samsung US Support directly. They have the necessary tools to check your device's IMEI and verify why the update server is rejecting the request.
You can reach them via the following link: Samsung US Contact Support.
In the meantime, you may try connecting your phone to a computer and using the Samsung Smart Switch desktop application, as it sometimes bypasses regional OTA (Over-The-Air) server errors.
If you have any other questions regarding your Samsung account or local services, feel free to reach back out to us.

Galaxy SI am having the same issue, with the same model phone. Multiple attempts on different networks always fail with the 'Unable to update the software. A network or server error occurred. Try again later.' error. Multiple attempts in "safe mode" also fail in the same manner, Following on-line advice, I attempted to update using the SmartSwitch software in Windows 10. That also failed, after a tedious download and check process:
Attempting to access "Recovery Mode" dumped me into this screen, which sat there without doing anything:
What now?

Galaxy SThank you for reaching out to us. We understand the frustration you're experiencing with the software update failure on your device, despite multiple attempts and using SmartSwitch.
Please try the following troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue:
- Clear Cache and Data of Software Update:
Go to Settings > Apps > Software Update.
Tap Storage, then select Clear Cache and Clear Data.
Afterward, restart your phone and try updating again. - Free Up Storage: Ensure there is enough storage space on your device for the update. Go to Settings > Storage and check your available space. If needed, free up space by deleting unnecessary files or apps.
- Use a Different Network: If you're on Wi-Fi, try switching to mobile data, or vice versa. Sometimes, a particular network might cause issues with the update process.
- Update via SmartSwitch:
Ensure you're using the latest version of SmartSwitch on your PC.
Try connecting the device again and ensure your phone is detected.
Use the Reinstall device software option in SmartSwitch if the normal update method fails. - Perform a Soft Reset: Hold down the Power and Volume Down buttons for about 10 seconds until the device restarts. Then attempt the update again.
- Check for System Errors: Run a diagnostic test via the Samsung Members app to ensure there are no underlying issues preventing the update.
If the issue persists, we recommend visiting an Authorized Samsung Service Center for further assistance. They can check the device’s software and hardware to resolve the issue.
