I have the exact same problem and I get the notification 10+ times a day. All I can find is it's something to do with gmail or sync settings but I can't find anything to prove it and don't see how that could be it because I've been using them and had them on for almost a year now and no messages until recently. I think it's a problem on Samsung's part but they haven't got back to me yet.

I got a reply from Samsung the other day and it just didn't tell me. It said they've notified the relevant people and are looking into it
