I'd just use it as it is no screen guard ,no case  and I've been using it like that since 4 years nothing happened, no even scratches on screens

Background limit might work but you can't get messages quick , so i guess you just rate the WhatsApp at playstore and tell them your issue they might fix it

Try backing up the data and uninstall WhatsApp and install again and restore your data then you might be all set then 
