Why does the call dialer doesn't show recent contacts

It's too common nowadays to have dialers with half screen occupying recent call logs and another half with the dialpad.

It's annoying to not been quickly able to dial or find previously called numbers. (not just last called) 

Is there any way this can be enabled?

Thats so trivial, everyone knows that.

You need "true phone dialer",

Shows recent on top, dialer below.
