Only way to accomplish this right now is to use a 3rd party app called 'Glimpse Notifications'. You can try that out. It's available on the Google Play Store. It's just that Samsung implemented it differently. Instead of waking up the whole screen, Samsung uses 'Edge Lighting', in order to save battery, I guess. I actually prefer the edge lighting implementation instead of waking up the whole screen for every notification as edge lighting will be more battery efficient in the long run. Otherwise, it's just a matter of personal preference as both gets the job done.
