Hi
No — you’re not the only one seeing random ads on an S24 after updating to Android 16 / One UI 8. Several users are reporting similar issues (popup ads, full-screen ads, etc.).
---
What people are saying
Some users in the Samsung Community say that after recent updates, popup ads are “taking over their phone” on the S24.
Others suggest that it’s likely due to a malicious or poorly-behaved third-party app, rather than Samsung’s Android version itself.
There are guides and forum threads about adverts showing in Samsung apps (Store, Themes, etc.), and how to disable many of them via notification settings or opt-outs.
---
What might be causing it
Here are some possible causes:
1. Adware / Malicious third-party apps
Apps downloaded from outside trusted sources (or even some from Play Store) can show ads unexpectedly. Sometimes they ask for overlay or “appear on top” permissions to show ads even over other apps.
2. Samsung’s built-in promotional features
Some Samsung apps have marketing / deal-offer notifications/promotions turned on by default. E.g. Galaxy Store, Samsung Pay, Wallet, Themes. Those can push ads or “promotions”.
3. Browser or Web site behaviour
Sometimes visiting compromised or aggressive advertising sites triggers pop-ups or notifications that persist. Clearing browser data and permissions helps.
4. New permissions / system behaviours with Android 16 / One UI 8
Updates sometimes reset or introduce new settings, giving more freedom for apps to run in background or show certain kinds of notifications / overlays. It may seem like it started with the OS update even if the bug is an app. Some users believe the timing is coincidental.
---
Things you can try to fix / reduce the ads
If you want, I can walk you through what to check/fix. Common steps people have found helpful:
Go to Settings → Apps and look for suspicious / recently-installed apps. If you find apps you don’t recognize or don’t need, uninstall them.
Check apps with “Appear on top” / overlay permission (Settings → Special permissions) and revoke for apps you don’t trust.
Disable marketing-/promotional notifications for Samsung apps:
Galaxy Store
Samsung Pay / Wallet
Themes
Samsung Push Service
etc.
Turn off personalized ads (Samsung’s customization service) in Samsung Account settings → Security & privacy → Customization Service → Customized ads and direct marketing.
Clear browser cache/data. If pop-ups are from browser notifications or websites you visited, this can help.
Use safe mode temporarily to see if the ads stop. If they do, it’s almost certainly caused by a third-party app.
As a last resort, factory reset (after backing up) if you can’t track down the culprit.
