Starting with the Galaxy S25, the filters reinterpret the warmth and unique charm of photos taken with film cameras in the past in a modern way. The Galaxy S25’s film-style filters digitally apply an analogous feel to the images, from filming to editing, going beyond simple functionality to tell an emotional story.
What is Film-style?
Actual film image 1
Actual film image 2
Actual film image 3
Compared to digital cameras, the color and saturation in film-style photos are soft with a natural texture. In particular, it means the expression of the actual scenes as it is with the grain noise that is unique to film.
Technology to Generate Film Effect
We used generative models to analyze the unique expressions of film such as color, and capture them naturally in the Galaxy camera.
In addition to an expert-level detailed touch-up, it provides a film style that is close to perfection.
2-1. A Harmony of Variety and System — an Introduction to each Filter and its Characteristics
We now provide 10 filters for you to try including six new ones along with the improved versions of four default filters that you have been enjoying.
In addition, we have systematically grouped the filters by colors (Neutral/Cool/Warm/Gray).
Filter |
Feature |
Soft (Breeze) |
A soft-colored movie filter with low saturation and low contrast |
Distinct (Pulse) |
A filter with a 20th-century documentary magazine-like feel with low saturation and color |
Clear (Crystal) |
A bright and beautiful filter |
Intense (Shiver) |
An intense filter with high saturation/contrast, vivid primary colors |
Cold (Chill) |
Creates a cold and dramatic image |
Gentle (Glow) |
A filter with natural, realistic colors |
Warm (Amber) |
Reproduces classic Negative Film colors/tones with retro colors |
Radiant (Sunbeam) |
A standard filter with a radiant and sophisticated feel |
Monotone (Shadow) |
Rich dark grayscale expression, overall soft black and white filter |
Dark (Shade) |
Standard black and white film effect |
2-2. Perfecting Details — Fine-tuning UI
We have added a fine-tuning menu for the five basic elements (Intensity/Contrast/Saturation/Color Temperature/Film Grain), so that you can adjust the default filters as well to suit your preferences.
Upon a closer look, you can see that each filter has a different fine-tuning slider bar.
This reflects the characteristics of each filter. We have paid close attention to details to make it easier for you to identify the characteristics of the filter you have currently selected by varying the slider bars for color temperature/saturation/contrast.
2-3. Grain Noise that Adds Emotion to Photos
Grain noise is the ‘Film Grain’ option, the last item in the fine-tuning UI.
Rather than providing the same intensity of grain uniformly within the image, we analyzed actual films and reflected the actual grain characteristics according to brightness using a Y value-based grain distribution selection and sampling technique. Therefore, you can feel the difference in grain noise between the bright and dark areas within the same image. You can also adjust the intensity of the grain effect with the option provided.
You can create an analogous feel in your images by adding grain noise, unique to film photos.
2-4. My Leveled Up Unique Style – Custom Filters
We interviewed professional photographers while developing the filters and the following was what they had to say when we explained these ‘Custom Filters’ to them:
“This is the real AI”, “This is a revolution”
Now, allow us to introduce to you the Custom Filters highly praised by professional photographers.
If you select an image you like, the Custom Filter analyzes it with AI and creates a filter so that you can take photos in the same style as that image.
If you are browsing social media and you see an image that makes you want to take a similarly cool picture, take a screenshot of that image and turn it into a custom filter. The Galaxy S25's smarter AI will analyze the image to create a filter that is your own.
However, this custom filter is not a new feature for the S25.
*Camcyclopedia My Filter
Starting with the Galaxy S25, we have significantly shortened the entry path and improved the usage scenarios to make it easier and more convenient for you to access. We have also improved the performance of our AI model, so people who have used the previous My Filter can experience a restoration function that is even more amazing.
3-1. Perfect your shots and edits with film-style filters
We filmed videos to show you how to apply the ten film-style filters provided in the Galaxy S25 via the Camera and Editor.
Insert [Screen_Recording_Camera.mp4]
< Run the Camera app and then select the Filter settings >
Insert [Screen_Recording_Photo Editor.mp4]
< Select the Filter settings in the Photo Editor >
Choose the film-style filter you want like in the videos above and create perfect shots and edits.
3-2. Create your own AI filter
Let us show you how to make your own filter via the Camera app. (The same process is followed in the Editor.)
<Before applying filter> <After applying filter>
The 10 film-style filters provided for the first time on the Galaxy S25 can be found on models that support the One UI 7.0 upgrade after Galaxy S25 was launched, and all Galaxy models that are released with One UI 7.0
However, the film grain effect in the fine-tuning UI and the new UI with improved usability of selecting reference image in My Filter will be provided only in S series (except FE) and Foldable series that support One UI 7.0
Try out the filters and enjoy analogous film-style images on your Galaxy.
