In past few years, computational photography in smartphones have transformed the quality of images, and have also transformed the way we take pictures as well.
One of the biggest accelerator in the improvement of computational photography of the smartphone has been the introduction of the Night mode in the camera application.
When taking photos in night mode, the digital camera uses a long shutter speed to capture scene details and also fires the camera's flash to illuminate the subject or foreground of the shot.
The night mode helps user to click better pictures by better illustration of the subject.
Essentially, Night Mode uses artificial intelligence to analyze the scene you are trying to photograph. The phone will take into account multiple factors, such as light, the phone’s movement, and the movement of objects being captured.
The device will then shoot a series of images at different exposure levels, use bracketing to put them together, and bring out as much detail as it can into a single picture.
Of course, there is a lot more going on behind the scenes. The phone must also measure white balance, colors, and other elements, which is usually done with fancy algorithms many of us don’t fully understand.Different manufacturers may use slightly different techniques, but the overall process should be very similar across the board.
