I would like to suggest introducing a Storage Health feature in One UI that allows users to monitor the condition of their device's internal storage.
Just as batteries gradually degrade with use, internal UFS storage also experiences wear over time due to constant reading, writing, app installations, software updates, video recording, downloads, and file transfers. However, unlike desktop SSDs, smartphone users currently have no way to check the health of their storage.
A dedicated Storage Health page could display:
• Storage health percentage • Estimated remaining lifespan • Total data written and read • UFS storage model information • Storage temperature (if supported by hardware) • Warning notifications when storage health drops significantly • Performance impact indicators due to storage wear
Benefits of this feature include:
1. Better Device Diagnostics
Users often notice slower app launches, delayed file access, or reduced performance but cannot determine whether storage degradation is contributing to the issue. Storage Health would provide valuable insight.
2. Early Warning Before Failure
Internal storage is one of the most important components in a smartphone. If it develops issues, users risk losing access to photos, videos, documents, and personal data. Early health monitoring would allow users to back up important data before serious problems occur.
3. Useful for Content Creators
Many users record large amounts of 4K and 8K video, take thousands of photos, edit content on-device, and frequently transfer files. These activities generate significant write operations. Storage Health would help creators understand the long-term condition of their device.
4. Industry-Leading Transparency
Desktop SSDs have offered health monitoring for years through SMART data and manufacturer utilities. Bringing a similar feature to Galaxy devices would provide greater transparency and reinforce Samsung's focus on advanced device care.
5. Improved Resale and Longevity
Just as Battery Health helps evaluate battery condition, Storage Health would help users assess the overall health of their device and make informed decisions about long-term usage or resale.
6. Complements Device Care
Samsung already provides excellent battery, memory, and storage management tools within Device Care. Adding Storage Health would be a natural extension and create a more complete device health monitoring experience.
As smartphone storage capacities continue to increase and users keep devices for longer periods, storage health monitoring is becoming increasingly relevant. I hope Samsung considers introducing this feature in a future One UI update.
