Xiaomi shows off 64MP Samsung ISOCELL GW1 camera for Redmi, teases 108MP sensor Xiaomi has been teasing an upcoming Redmi smartphone with a 64MP quad camera setup for a while now, and we already knew the company is working on the same. While details of the phone continue to be sparse, the company held a presentation focused around the camera technology at the Xiaomi Future Image Technology Communication Conference in Beijing, China. At this event, the company has shown off several key highlights of the 64MP Samsung ISOCELL GW1 camera sensor. Towards the end, the Chinese company also teased a smartphone coming in with a 108MP camera sensor.

Xiaomi’s Redmi sub-brand claims to be one of the first brands in the world to launch with the new 64MP Samsung ISOCELL GW1 sensor. This sensor from Samsung packs in 38% more pixels than a 48MP camera, which Xiaomi claims will help users capture brighter, vibrant and more detailed images.

The ISOCELL GW1 sensor is a large 1/1.7″ sensor with a 0.8μm pixel size. Xiaomi’s 64MP Redmi smartphone will come with camera features such as ISOCELL Plus for improved color reproduction, Smart ISO and Hybrid 3D HDR. Images captured with this new camera have a resolution of 9248 x 6936, and the size of each photo can reach a whopping 19MB, effectively enabling users to print 2.44m x 3.26m posters at 72dpi, if they wish to do so.

This technology will make its way to a Redmi smartphone, which has been officially confirmed to launch in India in Q4 2019. Collating this information with previously available info, this smartphone will likely come with a quad camera setup as well. If we were allowed to guess, this could also possibly be the next device in Xiaomi’s wildly successful Redmi Note lineup, though Xiaomi will likely reserve the latest technology for a higher priced “Pro” variant.

Camera Sensor While the event was focused around the already released 64MP Samsung ISOCELL GW1 sensor that will make its way to a Redmi smartphone, Xiaomi also dropped a teaser for an upcoming Mi series smartphone which will be the first device with a 108MP sensor from Samsung. This sensor produces images with a whopping resolution of 12,032 x 9,024 pixels.

Rumors from a credible source suggests that this sensor will be used on the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4. While this information aligns with the expectations from the next Mi Mix smartphone, we await further corroborative details.
